I am debating between buying a 1999 JD 4100 4 x 4 w/loader with 1100 hours vs a 1989 Ford 1720 4 x 4 w/loader. JD is listed at $13,500 (USC) and the Ford is listed at 11,000 (USC). I not sure about the spec. but it appears the ford has more horse power, live PTO, Heavier Built, and overall a little bigger. I plan on pushing snow, pushing dirt, mowing heavy grass and some light brush. Also plan on clearing some dead trees and pulling a trailer. I knowthe Ford is a 10 years old but overall I think the 4100 is to small. What about a 790 or is that smaller yet.I'm leaning toward the ford but having a new (almost) JD would be nice.thanksRob

I think it's more common to think of a tractor's age more in term of hours than years. 1100 hours is quite a bit of use for a '99 tractor. My 10 - 12 year old Ford 1710 had 489 hours when I bought it.

How a tractor has been used also affects its age. A tractor used mostly for mowing usually is a find since mowing is pretty gentle work. On the other hand, loader work can be hard on front ends and transmissions.

Guess it would be ideal to find a used tractor that never had a loader mounted and then buy a new loader. I didn't have that choice, and mine came with a loader. However, I didn't worry too much. 489 hours is pretty new for a 12 year old tractor.

Parts could be a problem for 10 year old machines. However, New Holland dealers still come up with parts for the old Ford 'N' series. Got to assume I can go to New Holland dealers for Ford parts indefinitely. I hope. ....

Tom,

Thanks, The tractor (ford) was used out West (Calif. Area) for mowing between grapevines. It does not have a loader on it but the dealer is going to put a loader on it which will be included in the price of $11,000. I have not decided which brand yet. It has 2600 hours on it so that would aveage out to about 260 hours a year. It's dinged up and the fenders will be painted by the dealer. I saw it just after it was off loaded from the truck. Do consider it larger then the 4100. The rear tires a abit worn but the front look good.

Rob ....
